Saturday, 31 July 2021 from 10:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Organiser: Sam Wildig
This project is about intelligence, or more specifically, informing the New Zealand government's intelligence.
Beach litter clean-ups are not a sustainable solution to the problem of plastic waste contaminating the ocean, we need to eliminate the sources. The data we submit about the deposits will help the government to identify these sources and take the right measures to control them.
The recent announcement to outlaw all single use plastics by 2025 is an example of how this works.
VUWTC are collaborating with VUWCB & Plastic Diet to manage a beach site for surveillance in Makara. Equipped with training from Sustainable Coastlines we are ready to do our bit to help shape environmental legislation to be as watertight as possible.
This project will be long-term, as we need to re-survey the site and submit new data in quarterly annual increments, in order for it to be credible.
Let this be our ongoing contribution to the environment!
We will drive to Makara and then walk around the cliffs to the site, it's about a 40min walk. No real tramping involved, but awesome views from the cliffs.
The collection won't take long, probs half an hour with a good turnout, then we'll walk back an get an ice cream at that cafe in the car park.
The analysis of the deposits and the submission of the data will occur at the university at a later time tbc.
