Organiser: Jack Huygens
Herepai hut is a great introduction to the Tararuas, it's only a couple of hours walk from the roadend but it's right on the bush-edge and has lots of options for exploring the open tops.
Our plan is to walk in, then those who are keen to do a bit extra can do a walk up to Herepai peak and some of the surrounding areas (depending on time and weather) and the rest can chill at the hut for the afternoon. We'll walk out the way we came on Sunday.
The hut has 10 bunks, but we'll bring some tents since this is also a popular hut over the weekends.
Purple = the walk up to Herepai hut from Putara road end (2hrs)
Yellow = optional extra walks on the tops (3-5hrs)
You need to bring general overnight tramping gear, which is described in detail here:
https://www.vuwtc.org.nz/resources/gear-list
Cooking gear will be provided, and we'll cook a communal dinner. But please bring your own snacks, lunch and breakfast.
If you are wanting to join in for exploring the open tops, make sure you have a good raincoat and warm clothing!
Cost will be around $25-$30, which just includes fuel for the drive and ingredients for the shared dinner.
Meet at the Hunter carpark (Kelburn campus) at 10am Saturday morning:
$30.00
