Kaweka Hot Pools

Please note: Currently we need drivers. At the moment we have 1 car, which means trip max of 5. If the trip goes ahead (depending on weather) it will be first-booked first-served for however many spots we have in cars.

Come along for a VUWTC classic which involves a decent walk and some rewarding hotpools.

This trip goes to the Mangatainoka hot springs up in the Kaweka Forest Park (Hawkes Bay). This used to be a tramping club tradition, but we were unable to go the past year or so due to cyclone damage to the access road, but now it's back up and open so woop woop. It's an easy/medium walk along the Mohaka river, and even has hot pools at the car park too (lush). This is a great trip for those who enjoyed Freshers and want to try something a bit longer but still very doable.

Plan is to meet at the Hunter Carpark at 6pm Friday and drive up, stopping likely in Levin for dinner. The drive is about 5 and a half to 6 hours, so we'll probably get there round midnight-1am. Next day walk for around 4-5 hours into the campsite, enjoy the hotpools, and then walk out and drive back on Sunday.

I haven't decided on whether it will be individual meals or groups, but will make a decision closer to the time.

Trip capacity will depend on how many cars/drivers sign up, but I will likely cap it at 3-4 cars (15-20 people) as the new hotpools at the campsite don't fit as many people as the old ones did, and it will be first come first served. Signups will probably open after freshers, but I may change my mind later on that idk. It is also camping, so will be either bringing own tents or sleeping under tramping club flies. Campsite is very cool though, and has an awesome beach next to the river if the weather is nice (see banner photo).

Costs will likely be around $50-60ish mark, but this depends on how many people we have to a car. It will be sorting out your own food, but feel free to combine with others if you want. Trip cost is also cheaper for drivers.
