Update 14/08 - cancelled due to bad weather forecast

The Kapakapanui loop is a lovely track with lots of variety: rivers, pretty forest, mysterious twisted forest, and fantastic views.

The loop can be done as an overnighter or in a day - we can do either depending on what people want.
Overnighter: 3 hours on one day and 4-5 on the other. This is suitable for beginner trampers.
Day trip: 6-8 hours. This requires a higher level of fitness but not more skills. Basically: can you walk uphill for 4 hours and downhill for another 4 hours, with breaks every hour or so?

We have to cross (small) rivers at the beginning so you will get wet feet. When I did the track recently it was also quite muddy.

Please bring:

  • Basic gear (+ overnight gear if applicable) from this list: https://www.vuwtc.org.nz/resources/gear-list
  • You can borrow a lot from the club - get in touch with the gear officers on Instagram in advance (vuwtc_gear)
  • This track can be done in running shoes as long as you don't mind them getting wet and dirty
  • It could be a good idea to bring two pairs of footwear - one for crossing the rivers and one dry pair for the rest of the track. It's winter so wet feet = cold feet.
  • Please bring a spare pair of socks!

Cost:
We will split the cost of dinner and petrol after the trip - I am expecting it to be around $18 per person (or $13 if we don't have dinner i.e. day trip option). If we stay overnight in the hut, you will also need to buy 1 standard hut ticket ($10) or a Backcountry Hut Pass.

I am capping this at 4 people for now because the hut only has 6 bunks.

Let me know if you have any questions :)
