We're heading to the Orongorongos for a collab with the Department of Conservation! We'll help out with some hut maintenance, and in return there will be a sneaky free night's stay at Turere Lodge! 4 spots available.
"We will meet at the bunnings in Petone at 7:30am. The plan is to drive up the Orongorongo Valley and service every hut (Haurangi, Jans, Boar, etc).
Generally, volunteers would be giving DOC rangers a hand, but jobs could include:
- Stocktaking
- Hut and Site Cleaning
- Checking Water lines with the Ranger
- Small Maintenance Jobs (e.g. painting, replacing worn gear ect)
There’s no skill requirement for this work, but we would expect volunteers to be fit enough to carry firewood or gas bottles for 15 minutes up hill.
Volunteers should bring food for the day, wear tramping clothes/boots and be prepared to walk out in case of an emergency (e.g. utes stuck in the river) - (if so, 2.5hr walk to the Catchpool valley road end)"
There may be some time to explore the valley. There are swimming holes, many walking tracks, and Mts McKerrow and Matthews.
