We're heading to the Ōrongorongos for a collab with the Department of Conservation! We'll help out the DOC rangers with hut/track maintenance, and we'll have a free night's stay at Turere Lodge! 30 spots available.
The base walk is 2.5hr along the easy-medium Ōrongorongo and Big Bend tracks. We'll split into smaller groups, which will each service one of 6 DOC huts. There are different walk times/difficulty levels for each.
We're looking for 3-5 people to lead the hut teams. We're also looking for several drivers to transport us 45min from Wellington.
Once we reach Turere we will split into 6 groups, though alternatively we may have fewer groups with more ppl:
- Turere Lodge - easy (no extra walking required)
- Haurangi Hut - easy medium
- Papatahi Hut - medium
- Jans Hut - medium
- Raukawa Lodge - easy medium
- Boar Inn - easy medium
Maintenance will be on 1st day, so the 2nd day will be more chill. There are nice swimming holes and several side tracks to explore along the way!
Hut maintenance tasks will include unloading new firewood, stocktaking, hut and site cleaning, clearing spider webs, toilet sparkling, checking water lines, and maybe painting or replacing worn equipment. We may do a bit of track maintenance as well.
A few of us will need to carry firewood and gas bottles uphill for 15 mins!
