Here's part 2 of our cave exploring extravaganza at Ruahine Corner!
In June a few of us headed in to Ruahine Corner to search for brand new caves on top of the limestone plateau there and we found 3 new caves. Our goal for this trip is to continue the seach at the bottom of the limestone bluffs and tent down in the river valley below the plateau. We've got some very exciting leads and are hoping to find some much bigger caves down there.
Later in summer there will also be a part 3 of this trip, where we are hoping to bring a much larger group up to the plateau including some more experienced cavers.
As part of this trip we'll also be returning back up to the plateau and hopefully surveying the caves we found on the last trip, so you can visit these ones too!
If you aren't intersted in climbing into any dark holes in the ground, you can certainly still come along to enjoy a big multiday tramp (5-6 days) into an awesome part of the Ruahines. More info will be coming for this trip in the future when we make more solid plans. The dates are very flexible and will be based on weather, but it should be sometime during the midwinter break.
Here's a rough route plan (very subject to change):
