Organiser: Kate Morris
This will either happen Saturday or Sunday - whenever the weather is better.
If you have a car you're automatically in - otherwise it'll be a waitlist system.
The road to the Ōtaki Forks roadend has been closed for five years because of a slip, resulting in a pretty mid road walk at the beginning of your trip and a soul-destroying road walk at the end of it. BUT NO MORE! THE ROAD IS OPEN!!!!
To celebrate, let's go on a day walk to Field hut - the oldest surviving hut in the Tararua ranges. We''ll go a bit beyond the hut too, to pop our heads onto the tops. Here's the DOC description of the walk.
It's an acheivable walk for most people, but not an easy one - it's about a 6 hour round trip, with a steady plod uphill all the way there. It's winter so expect mud. We'll meet at 8am at Hunter Carpark (no apologies, I am a fan of an early start). We'll drive about 1hr20 to the road end, then walk up to Field hut for lunch. We'll go up to table top, enjoy the view (fingers crossed for a view!), and be home in time for dinner. Probably.
You'll need:
- Lunch and snacks and at least 1L of water
- Suitable clothes for walking (not cotton or denim)
- Decent shoes - tramping boots ideal, you'll get away with trail runners, but no sneakers/converse/crocs. And some warm, non-cotton socks.
- Warm layers - a fleece or woolen jumper, and a warm hat
- A decent raincoat
Let me know if you have any questions! Oh and also I am a climate conscious queen so I do not actually own a car. Really hoping people with cars sign up. Please.
