Organiser: Liam Baldwin Jankiewicz

VUWTC has been given the privilege to look after Hinds Point, allowing for an awesome day walk and beach cleanup event!

We partner with Sustainable Coastlines to clear rubbish from the beach. We then count it up to help scientists and policymakers deal with pollution. Along the way there'll be plenty of yarns and laughs. You'll get gloves and pink fluoro vests (to stay safe and stylish)!

Yes I am doing this during a weekday because the co-founder of Sustainable Coastlines asked if some keen trampers could go out to Hindpoint and do a survey this month. I didn't have any time available for the last weekend of this month, but I don't have any lectures or tutorials on Wednesday luckily so I can do this day.

Plan:

1. Meet at Eastbourne - Muritai Road (near 497) at 11:00am

You can search the location google maps, if you are using public transport you have to take the 81 and 83 metlink buses to get there. I'll bring some of the survey gear and once everyone has gathered we'll split it up.

2. Walking time! (11:30am to 12:30pm)

It is an 1 hour walk from the meeting spot to Hinds Point.

3. We pick up rubbish!! (about 1:00pm)

After getting to the site we'll have some snacks and then set up a 100m x 20m area and collect all the rubbish inside. Equipment provided: gloves, funky pink fluoro, bags, mallet! There'll be a health and safety briefing, then we'll search for one hour.

5. Return to uni! (about 2:30pm to 4:00pm)

We will back towards to Muritai Road and catch an bus from there to a street in Wellington close to the campus.

7. Sort and weigh rubbish at uni (4:00pm to 5:00pm)

We'll count up the amount and weight of rubbish we found. This info goes into an online database to help map Aotearoa's plastic pollution. This might sound boring, but it's actually super fun. We should be done by 6pm. If you need to leave once we get back to uni, no problem! :)
