Friday, 1 May 2026 at 4:00 pm to Saturday, 2 May 2026 at 6:00 pm

Organiser: Robyn Surcombe

Mt Matthews is the tallest peak in the Remutaka range (941m), and I have been looking at it EVERY DAY from afar through my window in Welly. I cannot go all year seeing this thing so often and not stand on it!!!

The plan is to meet at Hunter Carpark at 4pm on Friday 1st. Trip capacity will be limited by number of drivers. We will leave by 4:30pm for the Catchpool Carpark, and walk in along the usual 1.5/2hour track.

We will find somewhere to camp in the valley - it will be dark by this point so remember yer head torches!

We will wake up early on Saturday to head up the river to the Mt Matthew Track (about 1 hour).

The Mt Matthew Track can be challenging for some - it is 3.5km long and climbs over 830m. At the top of the mountain, I will try and spot my house. Surely if I can see the mountain from the house I can see the house from the mountain, right?

We will head up and down and all the way out and back to Welly on the Saturday. That will make for quite a long second day (almost 18km).

Gear list and food arrangements TBC soon, but it will be the usual kinda stuff.

Cost: fuel and any group food contribution (<$10)

TBD
