To celebrate the club’s 105th anniversary, we’re going to Penn Creek Hut! We used to own and look after the hut, so it’ll be fun to see how it’s changed over the years and how others have treated it.
It’ll be a walk of approximately 1100 m uphill before an 800 m descent to the hut, 6 hours total. We’ll bag Field Hut, one of the oldest huts in the Tararuas, on the way too. Route below:

On top of normal overnight tramping supplies (see list here), as part of the celebrations, we’re planning on bringing a bunch of stuff to have a proper party. This stuff will have to be split amongst everyone’s packs, so please leave some room in your pack if possible. Full list TBD depending on number of signups (some stuff may need to get cut), but as of now the list as follows:
-
BBQ equipment (we are planning to have a BBQ for a shared dinner consisting of the most expensive steak I can find at the supermarket, with vegetarian sausages also available if anyone doesn’t eat meat)
-
A Moore Wilson’s cake (their cakes are excellent)
-
Pancake mix for shared breakfast
-
GOOD alcohol (to be carried in plastic bottles of course, TBD if people are down to drink)
-
And, of course,
-

The orange bucket. Or two, if we get enough signups (Field Hut needs one too.)
I will pay for most or all of these supplies myself, so don’t worry about having to cover it financially in the trip cost.
