Hullo Trampers,
On Saturday the 18th of December, we will be holding our final beach clean-up for the year (well technically stream leading to a beach)!
We’re partnering with Sustainable Coastlines to help clear plastic and other debris from Kaiwharawhara Stream/beach which sits on the west side of Wellington Harbour.
The game plan is as follows:
11am: Meet at the Interislander carpark just to the South of the beach (take a look at the map)
11-12pm: Speed run the beach clean-up
12-2pm: Make our way to the Kelburn campus and sort all of the plastics we have collected.
- Sacks for collecting rubbish + gloves will be provided on the day.
- All you need to bring are some closed in boots and suitable clothing for the day’s weather. (No high fashion, we are literally collecting rubbish).
^How to get there (ignore the random dots).
^ What our survey site looks like
Kaiwharawhara beach sits in an area that receives a lot of ferry traffic, which is why we’re running this clean-up within a short timeslot.
Our samples will go into a plastics database that supports wider marine conservation and scientific understanding within NZ, it’s good stuff.
If you want to help keep Wellington healthy, this is a great way to pitch in!
