This trip is dependent on fuel prices as it is about a 7 hour drive one way, cars/people willing to do a car swap, and Te Urewera being open. The dark red line on the Topo map indicates the track and where it touched the road is the road ends. Also, cars sometimes get broken into at the road ends (never happened to me before) and the huts on this trip and tracks will probably be reasonably shit due to lack of maintenance and vandals but it should be alg. This trip will be limited entry based on cars, fitness, and paddling ability, if you have questions email me at nic.jones789@gmail.com or call 02108182323
I was thinking of two groups driving up on Thursday (21st), group one aiming to get to the road end just below lake Waikareiti and group two going to the road end at Te Manawa stream.
Friday morning the groups would set off, group one would walk up to the base of lake Waikareiti, Packraft across the lake to Sandy Bay Hut (if we have more than two packrafts), or walk around it and stay the night there. Group two would trudge up to Manuoha hut and stay there the night.
Saturday the groups would walk towards each other, have lunch together, exchange keys and pack rafts and carry on, group one staying at Manuoha hut and group two staying at Sandy Bay hut.
Sunday group one would walk to Te Manawa stream and drive around to meet group two, group two would Packraft across or walk around lake Waikareiti and walk out to the road end. If we get out early Sunday there is a caving system that is fun to do.
Ummm also Sunday night if camp Kaitawa is taking bookings we could stay there and have a mean feed and a few drinks/mulled wine ;) It's a beautiful old school that was used when they were building the dams, now it's booked out to groups and has two massive dorm rooms, kitchen, dining room, and tiny cabin things. It also has a mini lake/pond out the back (that has giant eels in), there are kayaks available at the lake.
Monday we would drive back to welly (thankfully uni is closed on Monday)
