Pretty keen to run a trip out to Pencarrow head. There's a lot to see: the Wahine memorial, rocky beaches, rock pools, a grassy flat, an old wharf to explore, a sewer outfall pipe, a lookout with 360 views of the harbour/ Cook strait/ Orongorongos/ a nearby lake, and not one but TWO lighthouses... what more could you want on a day walk?
Track is mostly flat shingle road/ beach. Is about 18km return, so will take 4-5 hours plus time at the lighthouse.
Two things to keep in mind:
- There's no toilet along the route once we leave Eastbourne, so think about if ur fine going without one.
- Since the Pencarrow coast is very exposed to wind from both the Hutt valley and the Cook strait, it can get pretty chilly. Make sure you take warm, waterproof, and windproof clothing, good footwear is also a must.
There are no shops along the route, so please bring enough food, water, sunscreen etc.
Track starts by the bus terminal in Eastbourne, plenty of parking there. If people are keen to drive let me know. Alternatively the 81, 83, 84 buses go from Courtenay place to Eastbourne via Welly station and Queensgate every 30 mins or so, they take about an hour.
May postpone trip closer to the time if the weather doesn't look too good.
