The hike up to Waiorongomai hut is fairly easy. It's only about 2 hours walk, so should be a relaxed time. However, to introduce a bit of suffering that is compulsory for being a club member, I'm going to require all trip members to waltz along to my music choices the entire way to the hut (you'll have to walk back to Welly if you stop)...
Jokes aside, this should be a pretty chill trip. Waiorongomai hut is a bivvy, so it's a bit smaller and less equipped than most other huts. It's also free to stay at, no hut tickets or backcountry hut passes required! PLEASE note that most of the track involves walking up a river, so will involve many crossings, both small and largeish. The track does exit the river occasionally and enter sections of bush, so it won't be river the whole way. However, if there is lots of rainfall the river could flood and make the hut hard to access, so there is a chance the trip will have to be postponed.
Since the hut has only 4 beds, this trip will be a small group. Some or all of us may also potentially have to pitch a tent outside the hut, as if there are other hut users who get there first we'll have to sleep outside. I'll bring my four person tent, someone else could bring another tent to have extra capacity.
I just need one driver, the start of the track is south of Featherston near Lake Wairarapa, the drive is 1hr 15min (85km). Please reach out if you have any questions or suggestions. Also as this is on Easter weekend, bringing chocolate is a must!
