During the middle of winter, I ran a midwinter trip to Waiopehu Hut, a modern hut built in the early 2000s. I was late to my own trip, but I managed to get picked up along Willis St, and we ventured out to the best town in New Zealand: Levin. We went to the supermarket to pickup supplies, greeting Leviners along our way.
We got to the start of the track around the early afternoon, after accidentally going down the wrong path deep into a valley, skipping past the turnoff to the track.
The trek was enjoyable, with an easy rise to the top and a beautiful sunset from the Hut. There is no fireplace, but it is well-insulated, making it surprisingly nice and warm. In the very early morning, a few of us went up a nearby peak, I however, was sleeping like a baby. We got some epic photos in the morning too, which is epic.
