Its been quite a while since the club has got a Carkeek picnic away - me and Hazel gave it a go on Saturday and this is how it went (from digital camera record):

0500   Leave Poads Road

0537   Into Ohau River

0609   Fx with North Ohau

0700   South Ohau Hut

0800   Te Matawai Hut

0840   Pukematawai

~0930 Wandering around Arete in clag wondering where new Arete Biv is...

0955   Arete Biv

1040   Lancaster (fairly strong wind and clag coming across from Arete)

1217   Carkeek Hut! Picnic lunch...

1248   Leave Carkeek

1358   Park Fx (lost track couple of times on Carkeek ridge)

1421   Dorset Ck

1512   Pt 1000

1614   McGregor Biv

1701   Angle Knob - extreme winds required tussock and rock handholds at points (on flat ridge)...

1733   Jumbo Peak

1751   Jumbo Hut

1843   Atiwhakatu Hut

1946   Holdsworth Lodge

1949   Car

So at a little under 15 hours probably not the fastest picnic ever but we had some fairly fierce winds and lack of visibility to deal with at times so not a bad effort we thought. After successful Garden of Eden attempt and Dragons Teeth in Kahurangi a good start to the 2009 tramping year...
